Our Duet

The last election before he passed, Kenny and I both dropped our mail-in ballots at the polling place and met for lunch. We talked over our votes, society, and the power, insight, and passion within his generation. He felt very proud to be among such a progressive group of peers, and while troubled by the state of so much in society, he was hopeful for our collective future—if only we would awaken.

We talked a lot over the years about society as a whole, our responsibilities to one another and our planet, living in service to a greater good, and valuing people, principles, and authenticity. Nothing mattered if it didn’t begin with compassion and kindness.

I treasured every time I had an opportunity to talk with my son in this way. He was deeply insightful, quick, mentally agile, and radiated heart and compassion. He also had clarity of vision and could phrase things so aptly and effortlessly—it was ever a gift and a joy to talk with him. I miss his wisdom, insights, and eloquence. I miss his heart—ever mindful of the greater good. And I miss the wit in which he couched it all.

Kenny and I were like-minded in our values and could talk with ease and at length about matters of social consciousness. We spoke in measures that complimented and enhanced one another. I don’t believe there will ever be another with whom I harmonize with such ease. No one else knows our particular melody. And I’m weary of writing this lyric on my own.
